Island Born | Fearless Spirit
Husband and wife team Michael and Katie Morrison released this outstanding gin in 2017, born from their remote home island of Barra. In an increasingly competitive market, this couples innate desire to 'give back' to the island is a truly wonderful reasoning to support this product. They not only provide employment opportunities for its residents, they have helped promote tourism by putting Barra on the ‘Gin Map’. The fact that the gin is outstanding in quality, is simply the icing on the cake.
Of the 17 Botanicals in Barra Gins distillation, the main feature of Carrageen, sparked the greatest interest when we tried this gin in the restaurant. Carrageen is a species of red algae that grows in the cool Atlantic waters along the rocky coastlines of Europe and North America. It's sometimes called Irish Moss and is known in the pharmaceutical industry for its long list of health benefits. It's collected by hand and sourced wild off the coast of Barra. It's harvested after the spring tides when the water is furthermost from the shore.
Drink Me Healthy?
Exceptionally rich in nutrients and antioxidants, Carrageen is quickly gaining a reputation as the next big superfood. Health providing properties of Carrageen include Vitamins A, E, F and K, calcium, potassium and sulphur. It is also a naturally occurring source of iodine and is especially important for supporting healthy thyroid functioning. Rich in potassium chloride, Irish moss can work wonders for congestion and mucous and holds anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. It’s also thought to be good for dry skin and for skin conditions ranging from eczema to psoriasis, making it a valued ingredient for lotions and moisturizers.
Barra Atlantic Gin is beautifully balanced with floral and herbal notes on the nose. On the palate, juniper and citrus shine through followed with delicate highlights of carrageen. Finally, the mouth is left with a warm spicy finish that remains refreshing and clean.
Unpretentious and wholly open to individual palate preference, the Barra Distillery 'suggest' neat on ice as the perfect serve, so that one can enjoy the spirits full flavour profile. They then recommend one 'experiments' - with mixers and garnish that you feel may work.
What's truly refreshing is the complete emphasis placed upon your enjoyment of this outstanding gin.
We think our serve with Mediterranean Fevertree tonic on ice with pink grapefruit garnish is simply divine!
